Oh Instagram…you pesky devil you. I put off using Instagram for as long as I could. I was using Twitter, Facebook and YouTube already. I really didn’t need another Social Media outlet…or did I?
As I continued on my path of indifference towards Instagram I started to feel the tug. First it was a friend of mine who linked their picture to their Facebook account from Instagram. I wondered what else they had hiding over in that mysterious land. Then my daughter started using it, and of course being the vigilant father that I am, it made me want to join a little more. Then I discovered something shocking…Instagram has over 100 million users!
Are you kidding me? Why didn’t I join sooner?!? I started off by following a friend and then a couple of family members. They politely followed me back…woo hoo. Then I got one random follow who I tracked back to being a follower of my friend. I was really excited at that. Finally I started following some of the more popular people in my industry. I was amazed to see at nearly the instant their pictures showed up in my feed they already had 300 or more likes…I mean instantly! Of course they also had 50,000+ followers.
I made it my mission to push the envelope and get as many followers as I could. I started following followers of all the people that I followed (wow, say that sentence 10 times fast). Within a couple of days I was up over 150 followers. I was quickly getting stoked. It became like an obsession. Not that I wanted to be famous, but I was just enthralled by the challenge of it all. What could I do to get more followers? What could I do to grow my following on Instagram as fast as possible.
Then I started using some of the most popular hashtags on Instagram. These really spiked my following, because if you post good pictures (oh yeah, I forgot to mention…posting good pictures is the most important thing), and you hashtag them properly you will get followers. Some of the ones I started off using were:

- #me
- #tbt
- #cute
- #photooftheday
- #instamood
- #iphonesia
- #picoftheday
- #igers
- #girl
- #tweegram
- #beautiful
- #instadaily
- #summer
- #instagramhub
- #follow
- #iphoneonly
- #igdaily
- #bestoftheday
I robbed that list from another person that said he had success with those hastags…and you know what? So did I.
I then started using good quality filters and worked hard on making my pictures interesting and something that would spark a reaction from my followers. The more comments and likes I got, the more followers I got. Eventually I was getting 50 new followers per day, which just blew my mind…mainly because I’m not famous.
So when it comes to Instagram, it’s just like Twitter or anything else. The more engaging you are, and the more interesting you are, the more followers you will get.
